Harrison Township – It was a long, tough season for first year head coach Tyler DeBord and his staff. The Lancer football team fell to Marysville last Friday in their final game pushing the season to 0-9. It was a year of building and improvement for LC, as they are continually installing a new offense and defensive philosophy.

Offensively:

The quarterback position was split between four different Lancers. Senior Jeremy Spezia and junior Chris Duquet led in touchdown passes with two each, while senior Hayden Heinrich led in passing yards with 377. Junior Pat Whyte had a team-high 66.7% completion rate while throwing for a touchdown.

Sophomore Julian Smith led the Lancers rushing attack with 68 carries and 290 yards with a touchdown. Smith’s touchdown was on a 68 yard carry, his season-high, and caught 11 passes for 27 yards. Lasion Johnson complimented the ground attack for LC with a team second-best 70 yards on 39 carries. Johnson caught 4 passes for 38 yards.

Junior DaShawn Mills led all receivers with 28 catches for 410 yards and two scores. Mills was followed by WR’s:

Lee Kennedy – 11 Rec/152 yards/2 TDs

Griffin Oresky – 17 Rec/147 yards/1 TD

Kamari Cartwright  4 Rec/107 yards

Defensively:

The Lancer defense progressively improved weekly, while accumulating 13 turnovers (11 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions), a safety, and a touchdown. L’Anse Creuse tackling was led by DaShawn Mills who notched 48.5 tackles, and a team-high 14 of them for a loss. Mills tallied a sack, forced two fumbles, one fumble recovery, three pass break-ups, and blocked a kick.

Senior Tyler Bondy had a team second-best 44 tackles, 8 for a loss, while tying a team-high three fumble recoveries, and scoring the Lancer’s only defensive touchdown.

Junior Malik Bouissi tallied 43 tackles, 12 for a loss, while recording a team-high three sacks, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

Other defensive leaders include:

Kamari Cartwright – 37 tackles, 6.5 for a loss, 1 sack, 1 FF

Michael Alter – 28 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, 2 sacks, 1 FF, tied team-high 3 fumble recoveries

Rondea Sherman – 27.5 tackles, 1 for a loss, team-high 6 pass break-ups

Jeremy Spezia – 11 tackles, 4 pass break-ups, team-high 2 INTs

Cecil Trigg – 12 tackles, 2 for a loss, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 Safety

*Lee Kennedy returned one kickoff for a TD

The L’Anse Creuse football team is graduating 16 seniors who have given so much to this program and will be missed dearly. Their years of effort and commitment to the program has been truly inspiring and it set the proper standard for the future. Thank you seniors.

Despite having a slow start to his career at LCHS, DeBord and staff are confident and excited moving forward with the returning talent within the sophomore and junior classes along with the freshman class filling in their places. The team will continue to learn and improve, and we here in Lancer Country look forward to see what the 2017 season will bring.

As always, Go Lancers.
